Instructive visit to island Samsø
Albert van der Hem informed the royal couple about offshore wind energy in the Netherlands and Denmark.
On Wednesday 18 March 2015 the Dutch royal couple visited the CO2 neutral island Sams during their state visit to Denmark. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency requested Albert van der Hem to pitch during this trade mission. Albert spoke to the royal couple about offshore wind energy in the Netherlands and Denmark.
The co-operation between both countries in offshore wind was discussed during his pitch. The Danish are forerunners when it comes to offshore wind and the Dutch Government has taken an example by largely adopting the Danish offshore wind subsidy and tendering system. Whereas Denmark produces the best offshore wind turbines, the Netherlands have a leading position in the field of foundations, marine logistics, shipbuilding, offshore platforms and cable laying. Thus, enough to learn from each other.
Arriving at the small island Samsø¸, the first CO2 neutral island in the world, the delegation made a tour. The people who live on the island are owners of the wind turbines that make the island self-sufficient in its power generation. King Willem-Alexander mentioned it as an example for Texel. The energy excess is transported to the mainland. An important item that was discussed is how to overcome resistance of the local population. Besides wind energy and solar energy, straw provides for heat supply. There was also a visit to a straw-fired district heating.
